The thing nobody tells you: a hub shares one port’s bandwidth

A USB-C hub does not create bandwidth. It divides the single link to your laptop among everything you plug in, simultaneously. A 5Gbps hub has roughly 400 MB/s of real-world throughput to share across every USB port, the card reader and the Ethernet port; a 10Gbps hub has roughly 900 MB/s.

In practice: gigabit Ethernet running flat out takes about 125 MB/s, a UHS-I card reader up to about 100 MB/s, a 1080p webcam a few MB/s. On a 5Gbps hub those three eat more than half the budget before you plug in a drive — which is why a portable NVMe SSD that benchmarks at 1,000 MB/s on a laptop port manages perhaps 150 MB/s on a busy 5Gbps hub. On a 10Gbps hub the same setup barely notices.

The naming makes this harder than it should be. USB 3.2 Gen 1 (also sold as USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1) is 5Gbps. USB 3.2 Gen 2 is 10Gbps. USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 are 40Gbps and the only ones with genuine headroom. Three names for the same 5Gbps speed is not an accident — it lets a listing say “USB 3.2” and mean the slowest option.

The useful exception: HDMI does not consume this pool. Video travels on dedicated DisplayPort lanes inside the same cable, so a 4K monitor does not slow your SSD. What competes is drives, Ethernet, card readers and audio interfaces.

Which hub speed do you need?

5Gbps is enough for a keyboard, mouse, webcam, headset, occasional flash drive and one monitor. Pay for 10Gbps if you regularly copy from an external SSD or hard drive, or run wired Ethernet and fast storage together. Go Thunderbolt 4 only for two displays plus fast storage plus Ethernet at once.

HDMI output limits: why cheap hubs cap at 4K 30Hz

A hub’s maximum display resolution is set by DisplayPort Alt Mode, not by the HDMI port itself. Your laptop’s USB-C port carries four high-speed lanes, and a normal hub takes two for video and leaves two for USB data — which is exactly what lets you have HDMI and full-speed USB at once. The video ceiling is therefore whatever two lanes can carry.

Two lanes of DisplayPort 1.2 (HBR2) deliver roughly 8.6 Gbps. 4K at 60Hz needs about 12.5 Gbps. It does not fit, so the hub falls back to 4K 30Hz. Two lanes of DisplayPort 1.4 (HBR3) deliver roughly 13 Gbps, which just clears the bar — and that is the entire reason “4K@60Hz” hubs exist and cheaper ones do not.

The catch behind most of the one-star reviews: both ends have to support DP 1.4. A 4K60 hub on a DP 1.2 laptop still outputs 4K 30Hz, and the hub is not faulty. Anker states this outright for the 555. Check your laptop’s spec sheet for “DisplayPort 1.4” or “DP Alt Mode 1.4” before paying extra for 4K60.

Is 30Hz a problem? For a secondary panel showing Slack and a terminal you will survive, but mouse movement stutters visibly and video judders, so do not buy a 30Hz hub for your main screen. A cheaper route to a good result: run a 1440p monitor at 60Hz rather than a 4K one at 30Hz. Two DP 1.2 lanes handle 1440p60 comfortably, and a 1440p monitor under $300 beats a stuttering 4K one.

One more trap: a few adapters take all four lanes for video to hit 4K60 without DP 1.4. With no lanes left for USB 3.x, the downstream ports drop to USB 2.0 — 480 Mbps, shared. Fine for a keyboard and mouse, disastrous for storage. If a listing advertises 4K60 but describes its USB ports only as “USB 2.0”, this is why.

Power delivery pass-through: 100W in is not 100W out

Pass-through charging means plugging your laptop charger into the hub’s PD-IN port so the hub charges the laptop through the same cable that carries data and video. The number on the box is the input rating, not what reaches your laptop: the hub keeps 10–20W to run its own USB controller, Ethernet PHY and card reader.

Manufacturers are unusually honest about this in the fine print. UGREEN’s Revodok Pro 109 listing states it “quickly powers the host device up to 85W (the hub consumes 15W)”. Anker rates the 555 at 85W maximum to the laptop. Plugable’s Thunderbolt 4 hub delivers 60W from its own adapter rather than taking a pass-through feed at all.

The rating on the box is the input, and the hub is first in the queue. A hub keeps 10–20 W for its own controller, Ethernet chip and card reader, so a 100 W charger arrives at the laptop as roughly 85 W — UGREEN states 85 W out with 15 W consumed on the Revodok Pro 109, and Anker rates the 555 the same way. Feed the same hub a 30 W phone charger and about 15 W is left, which is why a laptop can drain while the icon says it is charging. Feed it nothing and the whole hub lives on the 4.5 W a single USB port supplies — less than one portable hard drive wants just to spin up. How to size the charger

  • Work backwards from the laptop, then add 15W. A 13-inch MacBook Air or thin ultrabook wants 30–45W, so a 60W charger through a hub is comfortable.
  • A 14–16 inch laptop typically wants 65–96W. Feed the hub 100W, expect roughly 85W to arrive — enough for normal load, not always enough under sustained CPU and GPU load.
  • Gaming and workstation laptops with barrel chargers should keep using them. A hub’s 85W will not keep up, and the laptop drains slowly while reporting that it is charging.
  • Do not judge by the charger you own. A 30W phone brick will run the hub’s own electronics and leave almost nothing for the laptop.

A dock with its own power supply — the Revodok Pro 209 and the Plugable hub here — sidesteps all of this, and that is a large part of what you pay for when you step up from a hub to a dock.

Mac versus Windows: the dual-display limit that catches everyone

If you use a MacBook, read this before buying a dual-HDMI hub. macOS does not support DisplayPort MST, the technique Windows uses to split one video stream into two independent displays. A dual-HDMI hub that shows two extended desktops on Windows will mirror the same image to both screens on a Mac. The hub is not broken and no firmware update will fix it — Apple has never implemented MST.

On top of that, base Apple silicon chips have their own display-controller limits:

  • M1 and M2 MacBook Air and 13-inch Pro: one external display, full stop.
  • M3 MacBook Air: two external displays, but only with the laptop lid closed — you lose the built-in screen.
  • M4 MacBook Air and later: two external displays with the lid open, which finally fixes it.
  • Pro and Max chips: multiple displays natively; a Thunderbolt hub is the right tool.

The workaround for anything older is DisplayLink, which compresses video in software and sends it over the USB data link instead of DP Alt Mode, bypassing both the MST gap and the display-controller limit. The trade-offs are real: a driver to install, screen-recording permission to re-approve after macOS updates, and a few percent of CPU for encoding. Invisible on a static two-monitor desk; wrong for full-screen gaming or colour-critical work.

On Windows, MST works on essentially any laptop with DP 1.4 output and dual-HDMI hubs behave as advertised. On a DP 1.2 laptop, MST still drives two screens but at reduced resolution or refresh — commonly two 1080p60 panels rather than two 4K60.

What to skip

Unpowered hubs feeding bus-powered hard drives

A single USB port supplies 4.5W, and a bus-powered hub splits that across every device on it. A 2.5-inch portable spinning drive can pull 4–5W on spin-up by itself, which is why the classic symptom is a drive that mounts, works for a minute, then disconnects — sometimes taking the file system with it. If you use portable hard drives, buy a hub with its own power supply, or use a PD pass-through hub and actually plug the charger in. Modern external SSDs draw far less and are fine on bus power.

No-name hubs claiming 10Gbps

The most common misrepresentation here is a 5Gbps controller sold as “10Gbps” or “USB 3.2”. A genuine 10Gbps hub states “USB 3.2 Gen 2” — not just “USB 3.2”, which is technically true of 5Gbps parts. Buyer reviews reporting roughly 400 MB/s on a hub advertised as 10Gbps are the tell.

Port count as a proxy for quality

“12-in-1” counts the PD-IN port, the 3.5mm jack, both card slots and a USB 2.0 port to reach twelve. An 8-in-1 with 10Gbps ports and 4K60 HDMI beats an 11-in-1 on a 5Gbps controller with a 30Hz output. Count the useful ports: how many are 10Gbps, what the HDMI actually does, and whether the Ethernet is gigabit — several budget hubs still ship 100Mbps and just call it “Ethernet”.

Sometimes the honest answer is that you do not need a multiport hub at all. If your laptop has USB-A ports and you just ran out of them, this ultra-slim four-port hub splits one 5Gbps USB-A port into four for roughly the price of lunch. Frequently asked questions

Can one hub give me HDMI and USB ports at the same time?

Yes, and almost every USB-C hub does. DisplayPort Alt Mode lets a hub take two of your USB-C port’s four lanes for video while the other two carry USB data. The exception is video-heavy adapters that take all four lanes, forcing the USB ports down to USB 2.0.

Why does my 4K monitor only run at 30Hz through my hub?

Because either the hub or the laptop is limited to DisplayPort 1.2. Two DP 1.2 lanes carry about 8.6 Gbps and 4K60 needs about 12.5 Gbps, so it falls back to 30Hz. Two DP 1.4 lanes carry about 13 Gbps — but both ends must support DP 1.4.

Will a USB hub slow down my laptop or my external SSD?
