It does not make them useless — it means the payback comes from three specific devices and from energy monitoring, finding the one appliance that is genuinely expensive. At 18.44¢/kWh, one watt of continuous draw costs $1.62 per year (1 W × 8,760 h = 8.76 kWh × $0.1844). That single conversion sanity-checks any energy-savings claim about smart plugs. Below is what it means per device, assuming you cut the standby draw completely, on a plug in the $12–15 range (as of Aug 2026).

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Standby Power project puts efficient modern devices near 0.5 W, while set-top boxes and always-ready consoles sit an order of magnitude higher — Xbox Instant-On is widely reported at 10–13 W. Your own numbers will differ, which is precisely the argument for a plug that reports wattage instead of one that guesses. Only the bottom three rows justify themselves on standby savings alone — and the top two are worse than they look, for the reason below.

When a Smart Plug Costs You More Than It Saves

A Wi-Fi smart plug draws roughly 1–2 watts continuously just to stay connected — that is $1.62–$3.23 a year of its own consumption at 18.44¢/kWh. On any device whose standby draw is under about a watt, the plug consumes as much as or more than it saves. It is a net loss, permanently.

Netting the plug’s own ~1 W changes the picture sharply. Phone chargers never pay back — a modern USB charger with nothing attached draws about 0.1 W, a tenth of the plug, so unplugging chargers is worth roughly 16 cents a year. A modern TV in true standby is net zero: ~1 W saved, ~1 W spent. A coffee maker nets ~$0.81 a year, a 16-year payback — buy it for the 7am schedule, not the bill.

What Is Actually Worth Metering (This Is Where the Money Is)

The real payoff of an energy-monitoring plug is diagnostic, not the switching. It finds the one appliance quietly costing you real money — and a single reading on an ageing refrigerator or basement dehumidifier can be worth several times every standby saving in the table above, combined.

Published consumption figures make the point. A 1993-era full-size refrigerator is documented at roughly 1,420 kWh/year; a current comparable model runs near 372 kWh/year. If your garage fridge is that old, a monitoring plug tells you so within a week, and the answer is to retire the fridge, not to schedule it.

Worth putting a monitoring plug on:

  • A second or garage refrigerator/freezer over ~15 years old — the highest-value single measurement most households can take.
  • A dehumidifier. A 500 W unit running 8 hours a day through a 6-month damp season is ~720 kWh, about $133 a year.
  • A well pump, sump pump or aquarium — anything that cycles on its own, where you have no idea of the duty cycle.
  • A gaming desktop. Idle draw on an older tower is frequently 60–100 W, not 4 W.

This is why energy monitoring versus no energy monitoring is the actual buying decision here, far more than voice-assistant support. A plug without monitoring can only act on a schedule you guessed at. A plug with monitoring tells you whether the schedule was worth setting.

Do not put a 1,500 W space heater or a window air conditioner on a standard smart plug. Three things fall out of that table that most roundups never mention. The Emporia is the tightest-rated plug here and says so itself — 1,200 W continuous, under a space heater and under some window ACs too. That is a design choice its listing is upfront about, and the reason we recommend it for diagnosis rather than for switching big loads.

Even the highest-rated pick has no real margin: the BN-LINK’s 1,875 W is 1,500 W continuous under the 80% rule, exactly a common heater’s nameplate with zero headroom. And motors are worse than their nameplate — air conditioners, pumps and compressors draw a large inrush current at startup that can exceed the plug’s steady-state rating even when running watts look fine.

The practical rule: heaters and air conditioners go directly into a wall outlet. To learn what one costs to run, meter it with a plug rated for the load, read the number, then take the plug back out.

Matter in 2026: What Changed and What to Watch For

Matter is now the thing worth paying for in a smart plug, because it decouples the hardware from any single company’s app. A Matter-certified plug pairs with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings from the same box, and talks over your local network rather than a vendor cloud.

The cautionary tale is fresh. Belkin ended support for most Wemo devices on 31 January 2026 — app, remote access and voice integrations switched off, and a large installed base of working hardware became dumb outlets. Devices supporting Thread over Matter kept working. That is why this guide no longer recommends the Wemo Mini, which our previous version did.

Two Matter details that catch buyers out:

  • “Matter hub required” is a real cost. The Amazon Basics plug states this outright — it needs a controller such as a compatible Echo, Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini or Nest Hub. If you own none, the cheap 4-pack is not cheap. The Kasa KP125M runs through the Kasa app without one.
  • Matter over Wi-Fi needs your router, not your internet. Kasa states that Matter devices on your LAN keep working when home internet drops. You lose remote access, not local control.

What to Skip, and Who Should Not Buy a Smart Plug at All

Skip any plug whose control depends entirely on one company’s cloud with no Matter certification. The Wemo shutdown turned a large installed base into inert hardware overnight, and unbranded plugs listing no certification are the same bet with worse odds — in a device carrying mains current, a missing UL or ETL mark is not a detail.

  • Belkin Wemo Mini and most Wemo plugs. Cloud services ended 31 January 2026. A previous version of this guide recommended the Wemo Mini; that recommendation is withdrawn.
  • Legacy Kasa HS100 and HS103 kits. Superseded — no Matter, no monitoring, and frequently confused with the current EP25 and KP125M. For a non-Matter Kasa with monitoring, the Kasa KP115 Mini is the current one.
  • Any plug with no published amperage rating, for anything that heats or has a motor.

And the honest version of who should not buy one at all: if your goal is purely to cut your bill and the only things you would plug in are chargers, LED lamps and a modern TV, a smart plug will not pay for itself — probably ever. Buy one for scheduling, away-from-home control, or the diagnostic value of metering. Those are real benefits. “It will lower your electricity bill” is, for most devices, not.

For outdoor lighting, the Kasa EP40M; to cover a house cheaply when you already own a hub, the Amazon Basics 4-pack.

Set the expectation correctly, though. Smart plugs on your entertainment centre and coffee maker save a few dollars a year, partly cancelled by the plugs themselves. What is genuinely worth hundreds is metering the garage refrigerator and finding it costs $193 a year more than a current model. Buy the monitoring, act on what it tells you, and the plug pays for itself the first time it finds something.
